Registration form

Choose a name

Every free page4 Website is reachable via a so-called subdomain. If your address is www.my-website-name.page4.me ist (1), then "my-website-name" is a subdomain from page4.me. This subdomain is the unique name of your website that you entered during registration. All letters, numbers and hyphens are permitted. Characters that are not permitted are automatically removed (for example (.) dots) or converted (the ü becomes ue and from a space automatically a (-) hyphen). As mentioned, then name of your website is unique, irrelevant which domain is used. Our German websites have then ending ".cms4people.de". If there is a website with the name test.cms4people.de, then you cannot register an English website with the name test.page4.me as the name “test” is already being used. Should you have made a typing error or would like a different name at a later stage then we can change the name at any given time without the contents being lost. Simply send an e-mail to service@page4.me with a note that you would like to change the name of your website. Please make sure to mention the name of your current website (oldName.page4.me) and the new desired name (newName.page4.me). Your website will be renamed within a short period of time without any contents being lost..

Entering your e-mail

In addition to your registration you will require a valid e-mail address (2) so that you can confirm the registration and so that we can send you the access details. Please make sure to write your e-mail address correctly. If you enter an incorrect or non-valid e-mail address, then our automatic e-mail notification with the confirmation link (3) will never reach you and your registration will automatically be deleted from our database after 48 hours. In order to login to your website at a later stage, you will need this e-mail and a password, which we will send to you after successful confirmation of your registration. We will of course never pass on your e-mail address to third parties. Important: You can only register one free website per e-mail address. If you would like to have more free websites, which is permitted, then all you have to do is register again with a different e-mail address.

Accepting GTCs and the newsletter

Once you have entered the name of your new website (username) and your e-mail address, then all you still have to do is accept the GTCs with which you will simultaneously allow us to send you an e-mail every now and then with updates. If all of the details are correct, then the register button will be actived and you can register the new website. Your free website is usable without any time limits. We fade in advertisement and a linking with a proper domain is not permitted. You can of course make use of your free website for commercial activities as long as you adhere to our GTCs. If you would like to earn money with your website, then we do recommend upgrading to the Premium Version as soon as you can afford it. You simply have more functions, more space and a real domain comes across far more serious.

Confirm your registration

Once you have sent your registration, an e-mail will be sent from our system to the e-mail address that you provided during registration. So please make sure that you have access to this e-mail address as otherwise you will not be able to confirm the registration. Open your e-mail program and also check your spam folder for new messages. Please do not reply to this e-mail as it is a do-not-reply e-mail. Open the e-mail and click on the link (1) in the e-mail to confirm your registration. The code at the end is of course unique and only valid for your registration. With your confirmation you show that you carried out the registration personally. If someone else used your e-mail address and you do not want to have a free website, then simply ignore the e-mail. You will receive another e-mail after 24 hours as a reminder, which you can also ignore. After that our system will simply delete the registration and you won’t receive any further e-mails from us.

Welcome message

File:registration-form-msg-3.png
A click on the confirmation link will direct you to a welcome page. If you can see this page then you have successfully registered and in due course you will receive your access details to your website in your inbox. We have also placed some information on the website to make your start easier. Should you be directed to a different page, then it is possible that you clicked on the same link twice by mistake. The best would be to ignore these notices first and check to see if we have sent you the access details. If they have not arrived, then please contact our service department.

The access details to your website

You will now find an additional e-mail in your inbox with your access details, the links to your new page4-website and general information on how to create first contents. Save this e-mail and make a note of the access details, as you will always need them if you want to make changes on your website. Please do not reply to this e-mail as this is a do-not-reply e-mail (4) and you will not receive an answer to your query.

Link to view your free website

You will find a link in this e-mail to view your new website (1). This link consists of the internet protocol (http://www.), the name of your website plus a dot (.) and the domain under which we offer the free websites. Once you have finished the contents of your website, then you should register your address with Google so that Google can find it. Many people that know a web address do not type in the address in the browser line but use Google as the start-page and simply enter your address and have Google find your website. That however only works if Google knows you and for that you have to notify Google of your address. To check if Google knows your website, simply enter “Site:” in the search and the complete address of your homepage incl. the protocol (http://www.). If Google knows you, then the search engine will list one or more pages of your homepage.

Link to editing your website

The e-mail also contains a link to directly open the dialogue for logging in. (2). The only difference to the view-link is that the command "/admin.php" is added to the end of the address. Usually you can also simply use the log-in link of your free website at the bottom of your homepage. If you have the purchased version or your website is set to editing mode and your visitors only see a “under construction” page, then this log-in link is not available and you should therefore know that you can always reach it via adding the command (/admin.php). That always works, both with your free address and also with the domain if you have the purchased version.

Log-in link at the bottom of your website

If everyone can see your website normally and you have the free version, then you can simply call-up this dialogue by clicking on the link “Login” (5) at the bottom of your website. This link is directly behind the line with the copyright notices.

User data for logging in

In addition, the e-mail also contains the access details to edit your homepage (3). These access details consist of the e-mail address with which you registered your website and a password provided by us, usually consisting of 8 numbers. Please do not use the password for your e-mail account, which of course will not work. Also make sure to write the e-mail address correctly. Should you have mistyped it an error message will appear stating that the access details are incorrect. That could mean that you used the incorrect password or that you did not type the e-mail address correctly, or it could be both. Please wait 30 seconds before trying to login again. We have built in a time-lock due to security reasons and if you try to login again too quickly, then it could be, that you will receive the same message again although you have correctly entered the access details.

Technical requirements to work with page4

The correct browser

In order to edit your homepage you will require a modern browser. If need be, the Internet Explorer 6 will also work, but with limited abilities. You should rather make use of one of the following browsers: Internet Explorer 7 or 8, Firefox 3.x, Safari 5.x, Camino 2.x, Opera 10, Google Chrome, Flock 2.x, Maxthon 2.5 or Avant 11.

A fast internet connection

In order to edit your homepage you will require internet access, through which additional costs may incur. Your website is stored on our servers and you can only add contents online. If you are going to write a lot of text then you should write the text offline in a text editor first and then login to your website, create a new text section and paste in the completed text and edit it. You should have at least ISDN access or even better DSL access in order to enjoy a reasonable working speed. If your internet connection is too slow, then under certain circumstances, it could take too long to edit and access the dialogues on your website. You should also optimise the size of the images you will be using on your website and make them only as large as is needed.

Activating JavaScript and accepting Cookies

JavaScript must be activated and Cookies have to be accepted. Should you be able to log yourself in and shortly after opening a dialogue be thrown out of the system again, then it is most likely due to the fact that Cookies are not being accepted. If JavaScript is not activated, then you won’t even be able to log yourself in as all dialogues require JavaScript.

Flash to upload images

In addition you will also require an up-to-date Flash version (10) for your browser in order to be able to upload images and to play the slideshow. If Flash is not available, then you will only be able to upload one image at a time and will receive the info that Flash is missing. Should you be using an older Flash version that is not compatible then it is possible that you cannot upload any images without receiving the error message. If you are experiencing problems, then the best thing to do is to update your Flash version.

Sufficient monitor resolution. Tip with Netbooks

The resolution of your monitor should be at least 768 x 1024 pixels. The more the better. If you are using a Netbook then it is possible that the whole page is not entirely visible. Try switching to full-screen mode by hitting F11. That way you will see more of your website. Our dialogues need a full-screen mode to be activated on a Netbook, as otherwise the buttons for cancelling and saving won’t be visible.

Using the correct access details

Also important: A lot of users appear to be trying to login using their password from their e-mail account, as the e-mail address is used as the user name. That is of course incorrect as we do not know the password of your e-mail account and you should keep this password secret as good is possible. You should of course be using the page4 password that we sent to you via e-mail.

Using your own password

Once you have logged yourself in, you can of course change the password directly on your website at any given time. Please remember the new password. Should you forget your password, then simply send us an e-mail and we will send you the current password directly to the registered e-mail address from our system. That usually happens within 24 hours.
